Busso Half – On the same day as club champs our serious artillery went over to Perth and had a dig at the Busso Half IM. Chris Stanton, on Jason Cain’s bike managed to get 9th outright in a time of 4:11 and a bit. Rob Hurley, also smashed the course up, getting 35th overall in a time of 4:23 and blowing the demons away. Well done guys and good to see you starting to come into some form for December’s club events.
Six Foot Track Marathon – The toughest marathon in Australia – Katoomba to Jenolan caves, 45k of off road torture. To understand how tough this race is, only two people in the race beat 3hrs 30 minutes and only 17 people beat 4 hours. We had 3 folk go up the hill, Karen Malone, nailing it 6 hrs 28 minutes, Mark Warzuger smashing out a 5 hrs 32 minute effort and Mick Campbell toying with the Pluviometer coming in for 6hrs and 6 minutes. Well done folks and if Ironman isn’t enough for some of you folk, go speak to Karen, Mark or Mick about a day out in the mountains. Total respect for completing this event.
Engadine goes International – laying the foundations for Chris Stantons impending visit to Ironman Japan, we had more members than you can poke a stick at go of to the Paris of the Sth Pacific, Nouvelle Calodonie and do the Noumea Olympic Distance Triathlon. They included Mick Hurley, Jo Southwell, Kim and Steve Tudjman. On top of that Janice Meers, Chris Southwell and Bob Southwell all won their age groups. There were also a heap of supporters over there so well done all and I think we may have a few extras do this next year.
APRIL 12 2008
The big dance – we had four members go to Port Macquarie Ironman last weekend. John Hamerslag came out of retirement, overcoming a career ending injury to smash the toughest Ironman Course in Australia pumping out a 14:06:22. Well done, John.
Slippery Morris, doing his third Ironman in 12 months, pb’ed the course. Like last year, where the marshalls forced him to do a 3rd lap of the swim which severely affected his time, he again had to overcome more adversity. This year, he was subjected to mechanical failure on his bike in the Bonnie Hills and rather than doing a Macca or Norman Stadler and walking of the course, he elected to push his bike for 28kms back into Port where he then went out and nailed the run, pumping out a very respectable 12:45:46. Well done, Steve.
Stephen Tudjman, look, there is a lot of rumour and innuendo about Tudj’s performance at Ironman and the fact that he doesn’t train. Well that is just a myth and completely untrue. Tudj did train for Ironman this year, I know it as fact he did one session only, it was 3 weeks prior to the race where he swam 400mtrs, followed by a 2k run, followed by another 400mtr swim into a final 2k run. He then went and did Ironman nailing it in 15:52:56. And lets not forget what he picked up Monday night after Port, no, not what you’re all thinking, he picked up a Five Times Australian Ironman Finishers Medal. Well done Steve, sensational effort.
Which leaves the man who has finished 4 Ironmans in 12 months, Matt Griffin who terrorized the course, treating the bike with utter contempt, coming home in 10:10:30. He was heard to cross the line saying “that was for pixie”. I don’t know what it meant, but you can do what you want when you do your 4th Ironman in a year, your slowest being 10:23 and you break 10 hours twice. Well done Matt.
Lastly, thanks to all those members of the club that went up and supported the members going round, it was great to see you there and be part of the Ironman experience. We already have a quite a few members putting their hands up for IMWA in December and Port 09 so if you haven’t experienced IM, nows the time.
MARCH 1 2008
Ironman NZ was today and Matt Griffin went sub 10 for the second time since December in an IM, well done Matt. Also a big congratulations to Glenn and Michelle Cochrane, Paul Donoghue, his partner, Deb Clemments and Kerrie Small who all went round at IMNZ as well. It was a very windy and blowy race so congratulations to all for covering the distance in such conditions.
